Air jet bathtubs are something different from the usual whirlpools or hot tubs. In these, instead of using water to spray the body with a massaging action, air bubbles are released steadily through small holes at the bottom of the tubs. Some tubs may have holes even at the back and sides of the tubs. Air jet tubs release warm air through these holes for a gentle all-over body massage. The user can control the intensity and strength of the air bubbles.

All the areas of the body are given a gentle massage relieving tiredness of joints and muscles. Because these bathtubs do not use water it is safe to use bath oils or sea salts for an aromatherapy experience. Many air jet bathtubs also contain one or more lights with colored lenses which can be used for chromatherapy.

An air jet tub is fitted with an automatic blow drying feature which lets out the excessive moisture after the unit has been switched off. This auto-dry has an automatic start-up 30 seconds after the unit is switched off. This tub also requires less floor space than whirlpools and is definitely cheaper also. Fiberglass air jet tubs are the standard norm though other materials are also in use for jetted tubs.

Whirlpools are fitted with water jets wherein the water is circulated through pipes to the jets by an electronic pump. A vented constriction near the opening of each individual jet injects air into the water and this released into the tub. The ratio of air to water can be adjusted. Whirlpools are filled and drained with each use and the force of the water can be quite strong making it unsuitable for those having certain medical conditions. Before purchasing a whirlpool make sure that adequate space is provided for and that the flooring is strong as these tend to be quite heavy.

The old-fashioned cast iron bathtubs are still a big draw for their vintage look and adorn many a spacious bathroom. It retains heat much more than other materials and thus is preferred over more modern bathtubs in spite of its weight. It can work out quite expensive though.

For people whom price is a factor along with easy maintenance, they cannot go wrong with acrylic bathtubs. Acrylic is resistant to almost all chemicals and only a mild, non-abrasive cleaner is required to keep the tub looking new. Since acrylic is lightweight, large tubs can easily be made whereas a similar cast iron tub would be prohibitively expensive and heavy. Acrylic bathtubs keep the water warmer than normal and are easy to maintain besides being color fast.

There is no dearth in the variety of bathtubs now available to consumers to cater to every need.
